Jack Pfeiffer:RCA古典部制作人,上世纪50至60年代曾制作出许多脍炙人口的录音。

Fremer: "So the people that think the originals are the holy grail, those are the magic, they're mistaken?" (有些人认为头版是圣杯,是奇迹,那他们这种看法是不是错了?)
Pfeiffer: "They are totally mistaken."(他们是彻底错误的。)
Pfeiffer: "They (the "original" RCA Shaded Dogs) had to be tailored to the deficiencies of the cutting and the playback system of the day. We used to listen to lacquers... on our own systems, you know, in the office and also at home, and we'd make judgments about... whether the compression was too great or whatever, because when the mix down was made to make the production master, they tried to limit the bass, they tried to limit the dynamics, and to some extent, they tried to limit the high frequency content at the end because they knew that that was going to be on the inside (center) of the record."(RCA头版阴影狗LP,当年在制作这些LP的时候,母带上的声音要做一些改动以适应当时刻盘和播放技术的缺陷。因为大家经常用自己的系统,在办公室或者家里听唱片),所以在刻盘之前我们要决定到底怎样对声音进行压缩才恰当。在制作最终用于压制成品的母模时,工程师要压缩低频,要压缩和限制动态,并且当某段音乐要出现在LP靠近内圈的时候,他们还要额外地限制声音的高频部分。)

felixcat注:因此从Pfeiffer给出的信息,我们可以知道早期RCA头版的LP,由于当时技术不发达,并且还有LP这种格式本身的缺陷,在制作的时候要对母带上的声音作很多改动,要把不少母带上好的东西给裁掉。同时这也暗示了,后来的LP技术发展了,需要改动母带声音的程度就相对小一些了。因此,认为头版阴影狗RCA声音最好的朋友,请三思。你可以说它“美”(或者其他任何漂亮的形容词),但你不能说它是“最好”。“好”的标准是“跟母带相比改动最小”——不然的话差别越多你反而说是“好”,这就太荒谬了。
