Adam tensor gammaIntroduction:
It was in spring 1999 when the physicist Klaus Heinz and Electrical Engineer Roland Stenz, loaded with vast experience on the field of speaker systems and a revolutionary tweeter design, founded Advanced Dynamic Audio Monitor (ADAM) professional audio. In a short amount of time, ADAM managed to become one of the most prominent tool s in professional audio monitoring.
Further development of the tweeter started after meeting Dr. Oskal Heil who stirred up the audio world with his air motion Transformer (AMT). Accelerating Ribbon Technology (ART) was developed with all the good qualities of Heil’s AMT while avoiding its problems.
On their 10 th anniversary ADAM Audio introduced the new eXtended frequency XART, based on the technology of ART, this new tweeters manages to show an extended frequency response.
Construction:
GAMMA is the smallest floor standing speaker of the Tensor family with a height of 1100mm.The cabinet of the Tensor series feature a sandwich construction consisting of one layer of sand between two layers of wood to dampen the cabinet essentially eliminating the unwanted vibrations to improve overall sonic performance.
Gamma has two 9” Hexa cone TM Woofers that work against each other to compensate the opposite forces
Midrange and tweeter are of XART transducers. Woofers are powered by 2 x 250 Watts Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) amps, and the tweeter is powered by a 50 Watt class A/B amp.
XART Midrange and Tweeter
The main power switch is at the back of the cabinet along with an array of controls for Bass, Tweeter, Mid, Input gain. For equalizing features include gain, Freq and EQ on and off switch and another for dimming the ADAM TENSOR on the front and the logo. Balanced socket is also provided for line level input.
Setup: Source – Raysonic CD 128 and VPI Scout Preamp: Supratek Sauvignon Room: Listening room measures 3550 W x 2600 H x 7600 L. Fifty percentage of the front sidewalls to a length of 2500 mm are covered with Studio CEL broad band absorbers and bass traps to the front and back corners of the room Speaker Placement:
Placed 1800 mm from the front wall to the front of the speaker and 630 mm from the side wall to the centre of tweeter
Listening sessions: Ten New Songs - Leonard Cohen. It is a well produced and superbly recorded album with a few sensational lyrics as one can expect from Leonard Cohen. The first track Opens with a sensational sound of a kick drum, which was reproduced very convincingly to make it feel that you are next to the real thing. Then comes Cohen, his powerful voice coming out of the ADAM sounded frighteningly real. As always Cohen plays and sings cool, takes his own time and space to tell the story which was portrayed to the nth degree thru GAMMAS. The ability of these speakers to project the multi dimensional soundstage and positioning of the images is breathtaking.
Next track was from Stanley Clark’s Album, Track-1
The album is of the fusion jazz genere. Its has a very unique 1980 s sounds with a touch of disco and techno flavour.Stanley on the first trck rips thru his electric bass guitar with energy and enthusiasm. This is faithfully transfered thru Gammas overwhelming the listener to make them feel like getting up and dancing. It shows this speaker can handle speed and attack.
Charles mingus at Antibes "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting – 1st track This very well recorded live track features Mingus’s exploding double bass work followed by Booker Ervin’s extended Sax solo, Curson’s trumpet and Dolphy’s exiting work. The texture of Mingus’s double bass and the Dolphy making his sax speak are conveyed with the emotion and conviction it deserved. It is interesting to note that GAMMA gets real with different textures of BASS like Double Bass, Electric bass guitar, Hammond organ, kick drum etc. Every note is distinct and produced with out any strain to project the emotion the musicians were trying to convey.
Tourist-St - Jermain
Track - Sure Thing contains samples from "Harry's Philosophy" (Miles Davis and John Lee Hooker) as you can expect from Miles and John it is bluesy and cool .The unforgettable voice of John and the techno loops takes you to the Smokey down town bar, only to find yourself already there.
Conclusion:
Even though poorly recorded albums were listenable through ADAM, you get distracted by the albums that are well recorded and end up playing them more often.
I feel speaker system are a personal choice and I have found my choice. You may like it or may not. Like they say, if you never, ever try you may never ever know. I highly recommend any one looking for an active speaker system to audition these speakers.
