RELEASE NOTES
HOROWITZ REDISCOVERED, the latest addition to BMG Classics’ critically acclaimed ReDiscovered series, presents the first-ever release in any format of pianist Vladimir Horowitz’s Carnegie Hall recital on November 16, 1975. The live recording features works by Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy and Moszkowski, three of which are new to Horowitz’s RCA discography and six more the pianist had last recorded for RCA before the advent of stereo.
Perhaps the most celebrated and fascinating pianist of the 20th century, Russian-born Vladimir Horowitz (1903-89) made his first recording in 1928 for the Victor Talking Machine Company, the forerunner to RCA Victor and today’s BMG Classics. He remained with the label through 1961, during the early years of his concert career and during much of his long sabbatical from public performance.

The recording of Horowitz’s 1975 Carnegie Hall recital came at the outset of his second association (1975-84) with RCA Red Seal. The pianist had reached a point in his career where he resisted recording in the studio, and his producers agreed to tape his live recital performances, to be edited as necessary to create ideal performances for release. The recital on November 16, 1975 was recorded for this reason, with no plan for releasing it unedited, in its entirety.

RELEASE NOTES
Heifetz Rediscovered, the newest release in RCA Red Seal’s acclaimed Rediscovered series of never-before-issued recordings, adds a new dimension to the recorded legacy of Jascha Heifetz. The CD, to be released May 7, 2002, includes recordings of seven works entirely new to Heifetz’s discography - the only recordings he ever made of these pieces.
Two major violin sonatas – the Grieg Sonata No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 45 and Brahms Sonata No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78 – and six encore pieces are included. One rarity – “Valencia” – features Heifetz playing the piano in a four hand arrangement with his accompanist Isidor Achron. All of the works on the CD were recorded within a 12-year period beginning in 1922, when the violinist was 21 years of age - only five years after the Carnegie Hall debut which made Jascha Heifetz a household name in America.

Because of the limited playing time of 78 rpm discs, Heifetz’s early recordings consisted entirely of short violin miniatures. Five of the short pieces on this disc were made before the advent of electrical recording, when performers had to play into a large horn, which transmitted the sound vibrations directly into the cutting lathe.

This CD also features a surprisingly unbuttoned, behind-the-scenes look at the austere figure Heifetz presented to the general public. Despite his rigidly formal presence, Heifetz was known to have a dry sense of humor and a gift for mimicry, which he revealed to only a few close friends. Made at the end of a serious recording session, a four-hand arrangement of Padilla’s Spanish song “Valencia” is played by Heifetz and Isidor Achron at the piano. The spontaneous performance includes a quotation of the “Toreador Song” from Bizet’s opera Carmen, and interpolated jazz riffs.
