It's the matter of resolutions of the CD player or amplifier or may be both.
Low resulotions means lack of harmonic details. Only full detail of signals
can make the instruments or vocal be separated.
Think of take pictures from camera or watching TV. A good camera lens
can express the deth of field with good separation. This is what we call
STEREO. Same can apply to Hi Fi.
"Stereo" also means the 3D soundstage. Recording engineers always
working for 3D in their recording and is just a matter of our system is able
to reproduce this 3D effect.
Your system obviously had not 3D but only height from the soundstage.
This is a very poor system and don't blame on the software.
