Theta Digital: Cobalt 307
The Cobalt doesn't have the Theta badge simply because, as a non DSP based DAC, they didn't want to downgrade their product image. No doubt it is a Theta, though. Superb build quality in and out. Out: 1/4 inch black anodized Aluminum faceplate, heavy steel case, big rubber footers, gold plated connectors, IEC jack. IN: Corcom RF filter, dual power supply (analog/digital), substancial regulation and filtering, and name brand DACs and output OPamps. Surprisingly large IC count for such a small chassis and basic functionality. The funtions are input select and phase invert, there is also a digital output otherwise its the basic bare bones DAC like the Audio Alchemy DAC in the Box.
Unlike some others have reported, I found the Cobalt as sensitive as any other DAC to changes in transport quality, that is to say quality transport equals quality sound, cheap transport equals poor sound. There is no reclocking, so a jitter-reduction like the DTI or DIP or Theta's own TLC might be useful in making a bad transport sound better.
With a good transport, the Cobalt delivers the traditional Theta sound: solid, convincing bass, good detail, and a quick, lively sound. Compared to really good DACs, it gives up a little in terms of imaging and soundstage, and realism of instrumental tone, but it is still pleasant and forgiving on the ear.
As these are available for not much more money than the basic Audio Alchemy model, ie less than $200 I give the Cobalt a big thumbs up on the value scale. A killer improvent when used with a laserdisc player.
