In a departure from a time honoured Creek tradition, the design and style of the 5350 SE Integrated Amplifier is definitely Hi-End. Creek's electronic design skill was always partially disguised by having to use less expensive casework and critical components, to meet very tight UK manufacturing budgets.
It is now popular for budget Hi-Fi to be made offshore, however, Creek believe that high quality British built products are still in vogue around the world, but need to be priced accordingly. Therefore, the company continues to manufacture in the UK but, to balance their designs, have now housed their excellent circuitry in larger and more stylish casework.


Built in an aluminium case, with a machined solid aluminium front panel the 5350 SE provides superior sound quality, look and feel. The 5350 SE is constructed in a modular way, with a separate power amp, pre-amp and remote volume control circuit boards, connected with computer grade flat cables, plugs and sockets. It features a passive pre-amp circuit, providing no additional gain to the source signal. Although not strictly necessary, it can be configured with an active pre-amp, if required, by plugging-in the optional 53LINE circuit board with 6dB's of gain. An optional MM or MC Phono pre-amp can also be plugged-in to further increase the flexibility of this fine integrated amplifier.

The Remote control circuit uses a motorised ALPS 6 way rotary switch, to select the desired input, and high grade 16 and 27 mm motorised volume potentiometers, controlled either manually or via the remote handset. In addition, the 5350 SE can be set to record one input, while simultaneously listening to a different input, similar to a video recorder.
To accommodate Bi-wiring and Bi-amping, the 5350 SE is fitted with 2 pairs of high current speaker binding posts plus separate pre-amp output and power amp input sockets. Speaker A/B selection is switchable from the front panel; joining and separating the pre/power sections is achieved with a link on the rear panel. The 5350 SE also hosts a front panel mounted headphone socket, which is unusual in modern integrated amplifiers.
Short circuit, DC offset and anti-thump protection circuitry makes the 5350 SE a sophisticated, user friendly integrated amplifier, with a technical performance close to the best that can be achieved.
  


For the technically minded:- The 5350 SE uses a high current, N channel only, MOS-FET power output stage, driven by a P channel MOS-FET phase splitter and double differential voltage amplifier with symmetrical class A driver, to achieve ultra-low distortion and high speed with minimal negative feedback. Therefore, the 5350 SE is able to avoid using any active circuitry in its pre-amp and still achieve high input sensitivity. The optional plug-in 53LINE amp uses all discrete transistor circuitry in a unique double differential servo controlled design achieving unbelievably low distortion and noise performance.
The 5350 SE uses a 250VA toroidal transformer, together with multiple power supply capacitors totalling 31,000uF, 105 degree C, low impedance, to achieve the quality of computer grade capacitors but with very low inductance, for the ultimate in sonic performance .


Like other Creek amplifiers, the 5350 SE is DC servo controlled, to enable direct coupling from input to output and accurate low frequency roll-off, thereby eliminating sonically degrading capacitors from its signal path.
The 5350 SE is a landmark in Hi-Fi design, incorporating state of the art circuitry with elegant styling to achieve a versatile and high fidelity amplifier par excellence.

The A43
If you are looking for a medium power high quality power amplifier ready to meet the needs of the most demanding of loudspeakers, the Creek A43 will provide a clear and consistent performance with a technical specification that will take it well in the next millennium.

The A43 replaces the A42, which was Creek’s first separate power amplifier. Its 50 watt power rating (into 8 ohms) combined with massive 18A output current enables the A43 to produce a dynamic power output of more than 370W into 1 ohms. For real ‘power fanatics’ it can be connected in ‘bridged mono’ together with another A43 to produce in excess of 150 Watts per channel into 8 ohms.  

The A43’s high-end circuit design includes rapid protection circuitry to disconnect the speaker outputs if a fault is detected and a heavy duty relay delays power-on to protect the speakers. A bi-colour LED power indicator changes colour to indicate operating status. The A43 can be used in multi-room situations and due to its increased input sensitivity, can be driven via a passive pre-amp from CD or other Creek source components. It is also bi-wireable with two speaker binding posts large enough to take two cables.

Using the P43 pre-amp, it is possible to drive other A43 power amps in a bi- or tri-amped system. In common with all other Creek amplifiers, DC coupling from input to output, monitored by sophisticated electronic servo circuitry, control the DC output voltage allowing the A43 to operate without sound corrupting capacitors in the signal path. This technique is very unusual in such a low priced product. DC servo circuitry alters the low frequency roll-off outside the signal path of the amplifier.
The factory setting is adjusted for average room size, speaker resonance, cable thickness and impedance, mains voltage and frequency, etc. The absence of capacitors helps to reduce colouration at low frequencies, improving soundstaging and depth of images.

The A43’s power supply uses a massive 160VA toroidal transformer, for high efficiency and low magnetic field. After rectification the DC power is stored in a large (22,000 mF) multiple capacitor reservoir which provides extremely low impedance and inductance. The amplifier's slim attractive profile matches the P43 pre-amp, but it can also be partnered with the 4330 or 5250 integrated amp or indeed the OBH-12 remote control passive pre-amp. To run in bridged mono mode, it is necessary to use the P43 pre-amp fitted with a bridged output plug-in circuit.  


This gives a balanced output signal to drive each of the A43’s channels in balanced mono mode. It is necessary therefore to use 2 A43’s for stereo operation, one for each chan nel. Creek engineers have once again produced a multi-purpose design for music lovers. The A43 power amplifier proves that accurate, full-bodied sound can be affordable. For the technically minded: The A43 uses very advanced circuitry, by any standard. Developed over several years at Creek’s research department in London, it enables the A43 to achieve ultra low distortion, massive peak current delivery - at incredible slew rates, while maintaining relatively low levels of negative feedback, allowing passive pre-amps to be used to drive the power amp to maximum power.

The A43 uses a bi-polar differential input stage and a proprietary Creek voltage amp and current source. This supplies signals to a novel Creek output stage, using a phase-splitting ‘P-Channel’ MOS-FET driving 2 ‘high efficiency’ 25 Amp ‘N-Channel’ MOS-FET power transistors, providing massive output capability.

DC servo control of the output signal provides extremely low levels of DC offset, achieved without a single sound degrading capacitor in the signal path.

活力重现 记Creek(朗泉)5350SE合并式放大器
□亦云

  不知不觉,Creek朗泉这个来自英国的音响品牌立足音响市场已有二十年历史,它的器材素以音乐味浓郁且物美价廉著称。早年的合并式放大器如4040、5050、6060等产品至今仍为发烧友们津津乐道,因为不少人是在购买朗泉的放大器后开始他的发烧生涯的。笔者的好友自文兄早期的发烧器材中就有朗泉4040,而今他已步入了,Hi-End的殿堂了俨然成了发烧界的知名人物。有趣的是自文兄某天到南海九江逛旧货市场时又购下一部成色尚佳的朗泉6060,已坐拥价值数十万元器材的他笑言要留作纪念云云,可见朗泉魅力可见一斑。不过,近年来朗泉显得比较沉寂,也许是推广方面的原因吧,市面上并不多见朗泉的产品。及至最近,得悉朗泉新发表的合并式放大器5350 SE荣登美国著名发烧音响刊物《Stereophile》A级(合并机)榜,才又引起人们对这一品牌的关注和兴趣。

平价机能登上自命不凡且眼光挑剔的美国人的榜单?这可是有点不可思议,不是美国佬的脑壳坏掉了就是朗泉53350 SE有胜人一筹之处。带着一些疑惑,开始了对这款新推出的合并式放大器的测试。

先看朗泉5350 SE的外观与构造吧。银灰色哑光面板采用了厚达10mm的铝板,除了比较美观外,对提高机器的刚性、抑制不良谐振有明显作用,整个金属外壳也采用1-2mm厚的金属板材,坚固而实用,面板设计还算简洁。四个大小不一的银色旋钮由左至右分别是讯源选择、录音信号选择、喇叭端子选择、音量控制。右上角是熟悉的绿字黑底的Creek商标,左下角印有5350 SE字体,最右方则是遥控窗口和电源开关,当然还没忘记留下耳机插孔。背面有四组讯号输出端子,两组录音输出输入端子;前级输出、后级输入各一组,以两条U型金属棒相连,可独立使用其前级或后级A、B;两组喇叭端子可作Biwire双线分音。整机体积为430×80×280mm,与以往机型的体积差不多,是典型的英国中小功率合并式格局,重量是8kg。机器内部简洁明快,右边躺着一只230V的高质素环型变压器,音量控制采用日本ALPS 20kAX2电位器,以电动马达驱动。每声道各四只MOSFET功率管,无源前级的设计可减少讯号污染,使录音更具"原汁原味"。此机最大的特色是掘弃了大容量电容,而采用了14只50V 2200μF的电解电容作电源滤波,这种集束电容的作法对提高声音的力度和瞬态反应有正面的助益。

从自文兄那儿借来旧款6060,正好与新款5350 SE作一个比较。两款机器摆在一起颇为有趣,前者是传统的黑色,显得朴实无华,后者是银灰色面板象征着新潮时尚。从美学角度看,两者互别苗头,无分高下。大致上,旧款6060的声音温暖醇厚,速度不是很快,但流畅自如,而5350 SE则在保有温暖声底的基础上加入了现代的明快爽朗,显得清澈无染,干净利落。好吧!就让我们详细看看5350 SE的各方面的表现。

朗泉5350 SE由于采用无源前级设计,讯号进入仅经过讯号选择和音量控制就直接进入功率放大电路,从理论上讲这是最合理的。因此,它的音质比较纯净、清澈,如初夏的天空,透视感相当的棒。它的质感不软也不硬,听小提琴不会紧绷绷地令人精神紧张,听钢琴也不会软巴巴的弹跳不起来。它的音色与旧款6060相比,无疑是淡了一些,没有那么呈晕黄暖调,仅仅带一点黄。也就是说5350 SE比较没有独特的音色,你的录音是什么音色它就给你什么音色,也方便你通过各种线材调整讯源等方法调出你喜欢的声音,就像酒家做的鱼翅,它本身没有什么味道,要靠各种高级配料做成的上汤来提鲜。当然,前提是鱼翅的质地要够好。

5350 SE的声音比较清秀,高频的量不多但有足够的延伸,中低频也是量不多而具有相当结实的质感,高中低频的平衡度相当好,各频段之间的衔接也较为流畅。蔡琴《机遇》第7段《关于爱情》鲍比达弹奏的那段优美的钢琴独奏,高音部如泉水叮咚清脆悦耳,低音区的巨大共鸣显示下潜颇深但不泛滥,表达充分又收放自如。Wilson Audiophile出品的黄碟《BEETHOVEN Sonata》小提琴泛音充足,擦弦声与琴腔共鸣历历在目,既不过分柔和又不会刺耳,有相当好的真实感和临场感,也看得出5350 SE的分析力颇具水准。

说到5350 SE的驱动力,以英国人设计的85W(8Ω)×2,你是不用怀疑的,一些比较低效率的书架箱也推得有板有眼。《绛州大鼓》虽不至于地动山摇,但也不会让你感到泄气就是了,值得一提的是5350 SE的速度和活生感,由于有相当强大的电源供应和集束电容的设计作后盾,5350 SE的速度相当快,完全不似6060的优闲自在。Chesky《古典精选》里的《查尔达斯》弦乐群飞快地舞动,由强渐弱、由弱渐强,如海浪般高低起伏,其戏剧张力扣人心弦,5350SE表现得绝无拖泥带水而干净利落,好像一切尽在掌握之中。无染的讯号输入和上佳的速度、瞬态反应,由此而产生鲜活的音乐,一台好的机器就应该是这样的。5350 SE可以大声地说,我有,我可以。

5350 SE的音场也是相当优秀的,尤其是配上ProAc、Minima Amator等音场表现优秀的喇叭,不是说5350 SE的音场有多深有多宽,这并非平价合并机要考虑的问题,而是说它在展现一个相当宽深的音场后,把音场里的动静、层次、细节都能恰如其分地表现出来,这是同类机种比较难以做到的。猜度这一优点也许是它被评为"A级机"的其中一个原因吧。

愉快的试听告一段落。我在想,世界在变,生活节奏也不断地加快,默守成规的英国人也在逐渐地调整自己的观念,从6060的温和内敛到5350 SE的快速活生的变化体现出这一点,朗泉5350 SE的表现是值得嘉许的,虽然对于它荣登A级榜我们还有疑惑,但它比较全面地表现各种音乐类型的能力却是无疑具有A级机的影子。朗泉也许会藉着5350 SE推出的契机,重新复发出青春来。如果商家继续保持其价廉物美的传统,而非一登龙门身价百倍,那不啻是广大发烧友的福音。

This button selects the disc input. The signal will then be processed by the disc preamplifier to compensate with the correct RIAA equalisation, applied so that the frequency response will conform with the long standing RIAA frequency compensation system, and does not include any low frequency roll off.  



Tuner input selector
Most medium output tuners will be suitable for use with amplifier when this button is selected.

CD/Aux input selector
This selector allows for a fourth signal source to be selected such as another tuner, tape replay or Compact Disc (CD)/ Digital Audio Disc (DAD).

Tape Monitor selector
This selector allows for the simultaneous recording and monitoring from a tape of any of the three inputs (Disc, Tuner, CD). Tone, Balance, Volume, etc. will have no effect on the recording. Playback of a recording may also be selected using this input. On releasing the button (press again), the signal source will revert to whatever input is selected.

Mono
This selector brings both left and right channels together into monoral mode. If an old mono recording with excessive background noise is being played, the mono selector will reduce the high frequency noise and place the image in the middle of both speakers. It will also reduce noise on FM stereo radio if the signal is weak.

Mute
This selector attenuates the signals to the volume control by 22dB which is useful when answering the telephone or changing records. It is also meant to be used if very low level outputs are required as it allows for better channel balance on the volume control.

Volume
This control sets the amplitude of the output, and its range of attenuation and effective maximum volume will depend on the input level of the signals being fed to it.
N.B. if a high output cartridge or tuner is selected, then the volume control will not need to be turned as far clockwise before the maximum power output of the amplifier is achieved and vice versa.
Continuing to rotate the volume control to achieve a sound level in excess of the maximum ratings will only result in distortion and possible damage to your equipment.

Balance
This passive channel balance control differentia I ly alters the gain of the left and right channels. It maintains full output whilst in the middle and reduces the gain on one channel whilst increasing it on the other.
If it is necessary to set the balance control more than a few degrees from its centre position, then you should check your signal source and loudspeakers for problems.

Treble CAS 4040 only
Both tone controls are designed to be useful rather than dramatic. The treble control has a frequency 'hinge' point at a much higher frequency than conventional circuitry (7kHz). This means that the loss of attack or presence in a recording can be restored or merely improved without annoying phase alterations at the human ear's most sensitive frequency range between 500Hz and 3kHz. The control is of a Baxendall type with both lift and cut.

Bass CAS 4040 only
This control operates in a similar way to the treble control but its hinge point starts at about 60 Hz and raises with control rotation to approximately 120Hz. Again, this is more functional than dramatic, and has the advantage of adding another octave of bass extension to smaller speakers without colouring the higher frequencies.

Headphone Socket
This is a standard 1/4" jack socket for use with low impedance headphones. When the loudspeakers are connected to the switched output terminals at the rear, inserting the headphones will automatically disconnect the speakers. Check the rear panel details for further information (section 3).

Power ON/OFF & LED indicator
This is the mains ON/OFF switch, with a mains fuse fixed to the rear panel. When the power is on, the LED will light.


  
Mains fuse holder
The mains input to the amplifier is interrupted by a 5 x 20mm Cartridge fuse of 2A slow-blow rating. For ease of replacement it has been fitted in a screw type holder on the outside of the chassis.
Before attempting to inspect the fuse make sure that the mains plug has been removed from the wall socket. This also applies to the inspection of the internal DC supply and loudspeaker fuses. If in doubt, check with your dealer.

Mains lead UK specification
This three core mains lead should be connected to the mains in accordance with the colour code information. The mains lead wires are individually coloured and should be connected to the plug as follows:-

                BROWN to'L'(LIVE)
                BLUE to 'N'(NEUTRAL)
                GREEN/YELLOW to 'E' (EARTH)

If in doubt consult your dealer or a qualified electrician. Equipment manufactured for Export will usually be fitted with a mains lead and moulded plug required for the specific country.


  


Left unswitched loudspeaker terminal
This terminal is connected directly to the amplifier's output, via the loudspeaker protection fuse. If a pair of headphones are plugged into the outlet on the front panel, the loudspeakers will not be disconnected.

Right unswitched loudspeaker terminal
This is the same as item 3, except read 'right' for 'left'.

Loudspeaker earth
These two terminals are the earth return terminals for both left and right hand channels. They both separately return to the central earth point inside the amplifier.

Left switched loudspeaker output terminal
This is the same as below.

Right switched loudspeaker output terminal
To connect a pair of loudspeakers to this amplifier you are given a choice of whether to come directly from the amplifiers via a 2 amp fuse or to connect via the switched headphone socket. This socket is for the latter type and allows for the loudspeakers to be disconnected in the event of a pair of headphones being plugged into the %" jack socket on the front panel.

The disadvantage of using the switched output socket is that this route may introduce a (marginally) increased resistance in the speaker path which has the effect of reducing the amplifier's ability to damp the overshoot of the loudspeaker cone at low frequencies, and in extreme cases it will modify the frequency response. Connection to these terminals can be made by the correct type of 4mm instrument plug, preferably the type that has a self cleaning 'knife edge' connection. A pair is supplied with the unit.
N.B. This applies to connections 3,4,5,6,7 & 8.

Amplifier heatsink
This black aluminium extrusion is the power amplifier heatsink. Care should be taken to make sure that it is ventilated properly, as prolonged high power operation will raise the heatsink to a higher temperature than with most conventional amplifiers, and may not only burn you if you touch it, but also you risk igniting any inflammable material placed near to it. So keep it away from curtaining etc., and always place the amplifier on top of any other equipment, such as tuners and tape recorders.

CDinput
This socket is for any auxiliary piece of equipment.

Tuner sockets
These sockets are for the connection of tuners with medium/ low output levels.

Disc sockets
These sockets are specifically for connecting a wide range of pick-up cartridges. The CAS 4040 can only amplify and correctly match Moving Magnet cartridges, of about 2 mVolts output, plus high output moving coil types. In the 1987 version of the CAS 4140 Serial Nos. A102390, an extra circuit is fitted to allow for use of low output Moving Coil cartridges, from 100 mVolts upwards. A switch is used on the PC board to select either MC or MM. See diagram 1. No extra matching components are required for Moving Coil, as the circuit automatically compensates for different cartridges.
N.B. In some cases, more capacitance will be required to properly damp the MM cartridge of your choice. This will need fitting externally.

Please consult your dealer if in doubt.

PU Earth terminal
The pick-up arm and metal chasis parts of your turntable will need earthing, and this should be separate from the signal earth returns. This is achieved by screwing the bare wires or tag into the eartg terminal next to PU input socket.
  

Move all switches left for MC or right for MM.  IMPORTANT NOTES

1. These amplifiers are designed to work into 8 ohm louspeakers only.

2. At least one minute is required after switch on before these amplifiers will produce their rated performance.

3. HT fuses are fail safe devices and if blown usually indicate a terminal fault in the equipment.

4. Speaker fuses are replaceable but usually indicate that the speaker leads or terminals have been shorted. Replacements should be only 5 x 20mm 2 amp slowblow.

5. Shorting the loudspeaker output will possibly damage the equipment and should be avoided at all cost.
