We had a clear idea from the outset what our phono stage should be capable of. Conceptually it had to be a pure valve moving coil preamp. Further, the preamp should have three inputs, and for each input, there should be a choice of five different termination impedances. These loads should be easily selected using a switch on the front panel. In order to fully satisfy our own requirements, we secured the collaboration of one of the best valve engineers in Germany: Reinhard Thöress from Aachen.
The result of this long-winded development totally thrilled us and far exceeded our highest expectations. The purely valve-based preamp provides a totally noise- and hum-free 60 dB of amplification, and that with just three valves.
The sound characteristics are marked by a high degree of fine resolution and detail, paired with a beautiful timbre and the impressive soundstage associated with a valve amplifier. The bass response is dry and accurate.
As previously mentioned, there are five different switchable termination impedances. We can be very flexible with regard to these load values, which can be tuned to suit your individual wishes. The TW-Acustic Raven phono stage is particularly suited to high quality MC cartridges.
